FLIR expands acoustic imaging line

Tool offers safe leak detection in explosive atmospheres for oil, gas, and chemical facilities
FLIR, a Teledyne Technologies company, has launched an IECEx-certified version of its FLIR Si2x industrial acoustic imaging camera, expanding its use to hazardous environments where explosive atmospheres are a concern. Already certified to ATEX standards, the Si2x now meets IECEx requirements, allowing inspectors to perform fast, accurate compressed air and gas leak detection in facilities that demand the highest safety compliance.

Designed for sectors such as oil and gas, chemical processing, and pharmaceuticals, the FLIR Si2x identifies and quantifies compressed air and pressurized gas leaks, mechanical faults, and partial discharges — problems that can lead to costly downtime, energy losses, and safety hazards. Its highly sensitive microphone array detects faults from as far as 200 meters away, enabling inspections in high or hard-to-reach locations.
The camera’s onboard analytics instantly calculate leak size, estimate annual cost, and assess partial discharge severity, helping maintenance teams prioritize repairs and demonstrate return on investment. Data collected can also support environmental, social, and governance (ESG) and sustainability reporting.
Other capabilities include customizable bandpass filtering to isolate specific ultrasonic frequencies in noisy plants, a 12-megapixel visual camera with 8× digital zoom and LED lighting, and compatibility with FLIR’s reporting software via Wi-Fi, USB, or a secure data transfer cable. Over-the-air firmware updates ensure the device remains current with evolving inspection needs.
“The Si2x is a breakthrough for inspectors who need high-performance acoustic imaging in the most safety-critical environments,” said Darrell Taylor, global acoustic business development manager at FLIR. “It empowers teams to work safely and efficiently, detect leaks faster, and reduce energy waste — all while meeting the industry’s most demanding standards.”
The Si2x is available in two models: the Si2x-LD, for detecting pressurized gas leaks and mechanical faults, and the Si2x-Pro, which adds partial discharge detection. Both models share the same rugged, compact design and one-handed operation for use in demanding field conditions.
FLIR, founded in 1978 and headquartered in Wilsonville, Oregon, is a global leader in intelligent sensing solutions for industrial applications. The company is part of Teledyne Technologies.
