Worley has been awarded a five-year engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) services contract by Energinet Brint A/S for Phase 1 of the Danish Hydrogen Backbone pipeline, a project aimed at establishing a national hydrogen transmission network in Denmark.
The initial phase, known as Danish Hydrogen Backbone 1, will connect large-scale green hydrogen production—primarily from wind and solar resources—to Germany and broader European markets, supporting the region’s evolving energy supply mix.
Under the contract, Worley will deliver EPCM services for approximately 41 kilometers of new hydrogen pipeline, along with the conversion of about 89 kilometers of existing natural gas pipeline infrastructure. The scope also includes associated facilities required to support Denmark’s emerging hydrogen network.
The project is expected to play a key role in repurposing existing gas infrastructure for hydrogen service, a strategy increasingly being adopted across Europe to accelerate hydrogen deployment while managing capital costs.
Execution will be led from Denmark, with support from Worley teams across the Nordic region, the United Kingdom and its Global Integrated Delivery center in India. Commissioning of the first phase is currently targeted for late 2030.
Worley CEO Chris Ashton said the award reflects the company’s capabilities in delivering large-scale infrastructure projects and strengthens its position in the Nordic market as investment in decarbonization and hydrogen accelerates.
The Danish Hydrogen Backbone is part of broader European efforts to develop cross-border hydrogen infrastructure, linking production hubs with industrial demand centers and enabling the integration of renewable energy into hard-to-abate sectors.
