Venture Global and China Gas Holdings have signed a new 20-year agreement for U.S. liquefied natural gas, expanding their long-term relationship despite continuing trade barriers affecting LNG shipments between the United States and China.
Under the sales and purchase agreement, China Gas will purchase 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG from Venture Global beginning in 2030. The agreement increases China Gas’ total long-term contracted volumes with Venture Global to 2.5 MTPA under 20-year agreements.
Venture Global said the LNG will be supplied across its portfolio of projects. The company has more than 100 MTPA of LNG production capacity in operation, under construction or in development, including its Calcasieu Pass, Plaquemines LNG and CP2 LNG projects in Louisiana.
“Venture Global is pleased to expand our LNG partnership with China Gas, a leading natural gas operator in China, supplying the country’s growing energy needs with reliable, low-cost American LNG from across our Louisiana projects,” Venture Global CEO Mike Sabel said.
China Gas Chairman and President Liu Ming Hui said the agreement would strengthen the company’s LNG portfolio and its efforts to develop an international energy trading platform.
Deal comes amid U.S.-China trade tensions
China halted imports of U.S. LNG in March 2025 after tariffs on U.S. energy products took effect. Chinese buyers subsequently diverted U.S.-sourced LNG cargoes to other markets. China continues to impose a 15% tariff on U.S. LNG, according to Reuters.
The new contract also comes as China’s overall LNG imports have weakened. The country’s LNG imports declined to a three-year low of 68.43 million tonnes in 2025 as China increased its reliance on pipeline gas and renewable energy.
The agreement is scheduled to begin in 2030, potentially allowing time for the current trade environment to change before deliveries commence.
China Gas operates city and township gas pipeline systems as well as gas terminals, storage and transportation infrastructure. Its businesses also include LNG and compressed natural gas fueling stations and natural gas distribution to residential, industrial and commercial customers.
Venture Global began LNG production at Calcasieu Pass in 2022 and has since expanded its Louisiana liquefaction portfolio through Plaquemines LNG and the developing CP2 LNG project. The company said its integrated operations also include natural gas transportation, LNG shipping and regasification assets.
