Venture Global has filed applications with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Department of Energy to advance its planned Plaquemines LNG brownfield expansion, a major build-out that would add more than 30 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of peak liquefaction capacity to the company’s export complex in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.
The filings mark the formal start of federal permitting for the project, which Venture Global announced earlier this year. Since that announcement, the company has increased its expected output by nearly 40 percent through continued optimization of its modular liquefaction train design and in response to strong market demand for U.S. LNG.
The expansion will be developed in three phases and include 32 modular liquefaction trains. When complete, the addition would bring total peak production across the Plaquemines LNG complex to more than 58 MTPA. Venture Global said the commercial operations timelines for the existing Phase I and Phase II projects remain unchanged.
“Incrementally expanding Plaquemines is a logical and economically efficient opportunity to build on our strong existing infrastructure,” said Mike Sabel, CEO of Venture Global. He said the increased permitted capacity reflects continued global demand for LNG and positions the company to deliver additional supply as markets evolve.
Venture Global framed the project as a flexible, scalable addition to U.S. LNG capacity, leveraging the company’s modular construction strategy to accelerate development and reduce incremental costs.
