Her son and current Ariel CEO, Alex Wright, confirmed her passing in a message to the company:

“It is with great sadness that I report my mother, Karen Wright, passed away today. After a long and tenacious battle with cancer, she died peacefully at home, surrounded by family. If you knew my mother, you know that she loved Ariel and everyone here. I could not possibly list the ways that all of us have benefited from her hard work, generosity, and leadership. We feel her loss deeply.”

A public celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Hodges Chapel of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, and will be livestreamed via MVNU’s “Live Events.” Burial will be private.

From hometown roots to global leadership

Karen Wright was born on July 4, 1954, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, and grew up in Springfield, Ohio. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. Following her studies, she embarked on a career in public relations, marketing, and communications in Minnesota before returning to Mount Vernon in 1980 to join Ariel Corporation, the family business founded by her parents, James and Maureen Buchwald.

Over the years she climbed the ranks of Ariel and in 2001 assumed the role of CEO and President. She led Ariel for two decades, guiding the company’s strategic expansion internationally and into diversified segments within the oil and gas industry. In 2021, she transitioned to the role of Chairman of the Board when her son Alex Wright became the company’s CEO.

Under her leadership, Ariel not only solidified its reputation as an industry leader in compression technology but also extended its global footprint. She is widely credited with steering Ariel toward a more prominent international presence and positioning it as a significant player in the energy sector.

Philanthropy and legacy in Mount Vernon and beyond

Wright’s impact extended far beyond business. In 2009, she established the Ariel Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, through which she oversaw numerous community and cultural initiatives in Mount Vernon and surrounding areas. Her philanthropic focus included economic development, education, the arts, and community revitalization. Among her flagship contributions are:

  • Ariel-Foundation Park (250 acres)
  • The Wright Family Medical Pavilion at Knox Community Hospital
  • Restoration of the Woodward Opera House
  • Support and expansion of the Kokosing Gap Trail arielcorp.com

She was also an ardent supporter of George Washington’s historic estate in Virginia, aligned with her lifelong interest in America’s founding principles.

Wright cherished her role as a mother and grandmother. She is survived by four sons, Alex, Andy, Sam, and (formerly) Hunter, and seven granddaughters: Evie, Lark, Annabelle, Frances, Sloane, Capri, and Remi. She was preceded in death by her son Hunter, her father James, and her brother Philip.

In lieu of flowers, Ariel suggests memorial contributions to charitable causes that were dear to her, including George Washington’s Mount Vernon and the Kokosing Gap Trail.

In remembrance Karen Buchwald Wright leaves behind a multifaceted legacy: a visionary leader who drove Ariel’s transformation into a global industrial presence, a benefactor whose generosity reshaped her community, and a matriarch who deeply valued family and service.
