Wärtsilä was chosen as the main technology supplier for an expansion project that will double the capacity of Biokraft’s bioLNG plant in Skogn, Norway. The plant, the largest of its kind in the world, will see its capacity grow from 25 tons to 50 tons per day, Biokraft reports.

The Biokraft plant uses a combination of organic feedstocks to generate biogas, but primarily waste from fish farming a nearby paper mill. The biogas coming from their biodigester is upgraded through a technology that Wärtsilä’s supplied a few years ago. That biogas is then liquified by reducing its temperature to -160 degrees centigrade.

The market for liquefied biogas continues to expand as global policy makers seek to restrict the use of fossil fuels, Wärtsilä said. BioLNG is a renewable energy source that is used as “green” fuel in transportation, industrial, and marine applications.

“Wärtsilä’s latest mixed refrigerant – MR – technology used in our liquefaction plants is extremely reliable and offers the lowest operating costs for liquefying biogas. We are proud to have once again been selected by Biokraft since it represents a clear endorsement of customer satisfaction,” said Maria Ortiz, sales manager, biogas solutions in Wärtsilä Gas Solutions.

The order for the expanded capacity was placed in April and the new equipment is scheduled for delivery in May 2022.

Norway’s Biokraft is a subsidiary of the Scandinavian Biogas Group. The biogas from the factory was originally intended to be used as fuel in buses, heavy transport, vans and ferries.
