Universal Plant Services acquires Mechanical Solutions

Universal Plant Services (UPS) has acquired Mechanical Solutions Inc. (MSI), an engineering firm specializing in fluid machinery and turbomachinery systems, in a move that broadens UPS’s technical capabilities in rotating equipment services. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

UPS, a Houston-based provider of maintenance, repair and outage services for rotating and reciprocating equipment, is backed by private equity firm New State Capital Partners. The acquisition represents the first add-on under New State’s ownership and aligns with a broader strategy to expand UPS’s service offering.

MSI, headquartered in Whippany, New Jersey, focuses on testing, diagnostics and engineering analysis for critical rotating machinery, including compressors, pumps and related systems. The company has operated for more than 30 years and serves customers across refining, power generation, chemical processing and water and wastewater sectors.

The combination is intended to integrate engineering analysis with field execution, an area that has traditionally been handled by separate providers. By bringing MSI’s diagnostic and analytical capabilities in-house, UPS aims to connect front-end engineering assessment with maintenance and outage work performed at operating facilities.

UPS CEO Eric Zimmer said the addition of MSI expands the company’s ability to address complex equipment issues across the full lifecycle of rotating assets. MSI CEO Bill Marschner said the companies’ services are complementary and that the combined platform provides access to additional technical and operational resources.

New State Capital Partners described the transaction as part of a buy-and-build approach for UPS, with MSI adding technical depth in areas such as vibration analysis, performance troubleshooting and machinery dynamics.

UPS operates from 14 locations across the United States and provides services to downstream, midstream and industrial facilities, including pipeline stations and processing plants. The addition of MSI introduces an engineering-focused capability set that can be applied to diagnosing performance issues and supporting reliability improvements in compression and turbomachinery systems.
