Massive Gas Well Discovered In Indonesia

Repsol, along with partners Petronas and Moeco, have made a massive gas discovery in Indonesia. The well, known as KBD-2X, is said to the largest gas find in Indonesia over the past 18 years and among the 10 largest global discoveries in the last 12 months, according to Repsol.

The partnership estimates that the well, located in South Sumatra, has at least 2 Tcf (56.6 X 10⁹ m³) of recoverable gas.

The discovery took place in the Sakakemang block in South Sumatra, where Repsol holds a 45% working interest. Its partners – Petronas and Moeco – have a 45% and 10% ownership, respectively.

Repsol will continue exploring the area, with an appraisal following shortly thereafter. Its strategy for the well is to develop the gas asset. The next steps involve authorizing a drilling and seismic acquisition campaign this year and in 2020, the company said.

Repsol has made more than 50 hydrocarbon discoveries from 2007 to 2019. More than half of these discoveries are already in production.
