Gas was 38% of U.S. energy consumption in 2020: EIA

U.S. natural gas companies produced 2.973 quadrillion Btu in January, down just 0.1% from the prior month and down 2.7% from the same month in 2020, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported. Gas production represents about 36% of all energy available to U.S. consumers.

Meanwhile, U.S. natural gas consumption reached 3.4 quadrillion Btu, about 38% of US primary energy consumption, the EIA said. At the same time, natural gas accounted for 16% of U.S. primary energy imports and 27% of U.S. primary energy exports, according to data in the EIA’s monthly energy review. 

When demand for energy is broken down by sector within the U.S., gas accounted for 83% of energy consumed in the commercial and residential sectors, 49% in the industrial sector, 28% in the electric power sector and 5% in the transportation sector.

The gas market reported 2.635 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of working gas in storage, down 21% from the previous month, but up 0.7% from January 2020.
