Woodfibre LNG receives first modules, begins vertical construction at Squamish site

Project hits major milestone as seven pipe rack modules arrive for offloading and installation

The Woodfibre LNG project reached a major construction milestone on Saturday with the safe arrival of the first seven specialized LNG modules to site. The pipe rack modules, transported by heavy cargo vessel, are the first large-scale modular components to arrive at the site for installation.

The Woodfibre LNG project reached a significant construction milestone, marking the arrival of its first large-scale modular components at the project site near Squamish, British Columbia. Seven specialized pipe rack modules were safely delivered via heavy cargo vessel and are now being prepared for offloading at the project’s newly completed Marine Offloading Facility.

“This is a huge milestone for the Woodfibre LNG project as it’s the start of our facility going vertical—where people will really start to see the facility take shape,” said Luke Schauerte, CEO of Woodfibre LNG. “These first modules are a significant step forward in diversifying Canada’s energy export market, providing global customers with responsibly produced energy and ensuring Canadians receive maximum benefit for their resources.”

The pipe rack modules are pre-fabricated steel frameworks designed to support the LNG transfer piping between the plant’s core liquefaction unit and the floating storage tanks and marine loading systems. Once operational, the piping network will enable the seamless movement of liquefied natural gas to export carriers for overseas delivery.

First phase of 19 total modules arriving through 2026

This initial delivery represents the first seven of 19 modular components that will arrive at the site throughout the remainder of 2025 and into 2026. These prefabricated modules vary significantly in scale—from a 126-tonne pipe rack to an 11,000-tonne liquefaction unit that will occupy roughly the same area as a football field.

Following offloading, the modules will be moved into position and secured on permanent foundations as the project transitions into full-scale vertical construction. According to Woodfibre LNG, this marks the beginning of the most visible and complex phase of development at the site.

“We’ve hit a tremendously exciting and important phase where our site will change rapidly over the coming months,” said Schauerte. “We’re focused on working safely and efficiently to move this project forward and complete the province’s first net zero LNG export facility.”

Project scope and sustainability goals

Once complete, the Woodfibre LNG facility will produce 2.1 million tonnes of LNG annually for export to international markets. The site is located on the traditional territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), which is playing a regulatory role in the project. Woodfibre LNG is the first industrial development in Canada to formally recognize a non-treaty Indigenous government as a full environmental regulator.

Woodfibre LNG is also positioning itself as the world’s first net zero LNG export terminal, with a target completion date of 2027. The project’s carbon-reduction strategy includes the use of clean hydroelectric power from BC Hydro to drive the liquefaction process, as well as commitments to offset residual emissions.

The project is owned by Woodfibre LNG Limited Partnership, a joint venture between Pacific Energy Corporation (Canada) Limited (70 percent) and Enbridge Inc. (30 percent).

With construction now entering its most active phase, the company anticipates regular module arrivals and ongoing vertical integration at the site. Marine logistics, heavy lift operations, and module placement will continue throughout the next 18 months as Woodfibre LNG progresses toward commissioning and startup.
