Siemens Energy chosen for hydrogen compressor station

The Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH) project company is building a 100 MW electrolysis plant for green hydrogen at the site of the former Moorburg coal-fired power plant.

Siemens Energy has been awarded the contract to supply the hydrogen compression station for Hamburger Energienetze’s Moorburg project, a flagship initiative to transform the site of the former Moorburg coal-fired power plant into a green hydrogen production and distribution hub.

As part of the order, Siemens Energy will deliver two large hydrogen compressor packages along with a full balance-of-plant (BoP) scope, including a medium-voltage electrical station and complete installation services. The compression station will play a central role in enabling hydrogen transport and logistics from the site.

The compression system is integrated into the 100 MW Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH), where Siemens Energy is also supplying the electrolyzer technology. Together, the electrolyzer and compression packages position Siemens Energy as a key technology provider across multiple stages of the hydrogen value chain at Moorburg.

The infrastructure will enable green hydrogen produced at the site to be injected into the HH-WIN hydrogen network and distributed via a dedicated trailer loading station, supporting both pipeline transport and mobility applications.

Construction activities for the overall facility began with site preparations in 2025, with commissioning of the hydrogen systems scheduled for the second half of 2027.

The Moorburg project is a cornerstone of Germany’s national hydrogen strategy, which aims to repurpose legacy fossil fuel infrastructure into renewable energy hubs while accelerating the development of industrial-scale hydrogen production, transport and utilization.
