Freudenberg Group is expanding its footprint in offshore energy infrastructure through the acquisition of Balmoral Comtec, a Scotland-based supplier of buoyancy, cable protection and thermal insulation systems serving offshore oil and gas and renewable energy markets.
The acquisition, completed May 19 through Freudenberg Flow Technologies, strengthens the company’s Connectors and Sealing Solutions business unit, which provides sealing, connector and related technologies for energy-sector applications.
Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Based in Aberdeen, Scotland, Balmoral Comtec has more than 45 years of experience supplying engineered buoyancy and subsea protection products for offshore developments. The company employs approximately 400 people across three U.K. locations and supports projects in Europe, South America and Asia.
Its product portfolio includes subsea buoyancy modules, cable protection systems and thermal insulation technologies used in offshore oil and gas production, subsea power infrastructure and offshore wind developments.
For the oil and gas sector, those systems help protect subsea umbilicals, power cables and flowlines operating in harsh offshore environments where mechanical protection, thermal management and long-term reliability are critical to field performance.
The acquisition also reflects broader energy-industry trends as suppliers increasingly seek exposure to both conventional offshore energy and lower-carbon infrastructure markets.
“The acquisition of Balmoral Comtec not only expands our current business in the conventional energy segment,” said Jason Kollatschny, CEO of Connectors and Sealing Solutions at Freudenberg Flow Technologies. “Thanks to the diversified product offering it grows our portfolio of products supporting the energy transition.”
Freudenberg said Balmoral Comtec’s offerings complement its existing sealing and connector technologies while expanding the company’s capabilities in integrated offshore infrastructure solutions.
According to Kollatschny, the acquisition supports Freudenberg’s strategy of becoming a broader provider of sealing systems, buoyancy products, cable protection technologies and digital monitoring solutions for global energy customers.
“Balmoral Comtec’s product portfolio complements our existing solution offering,” Kollatschny said. “The acquisition is an important milestone on our path to becoming the leading integrated solution provider for critical sealing systems, buoyancy and cable protection products, services, Engineering & Technology as well as Digitalization & Monitoring solutions to our global customer base.”
The transaction comes as offshore energy markets continue seeing strong investment activity tied to subsea developments, floating production systems, offshore electrification projects and offshore wind expansion.
Subsea cable protection and buoyancy technologies have become increasingly important as offshore systems grow more complex and operators push into deeper water, harsher environments and longer tieback distances.
For offshore oil and gas developments, buoyancy and insulation systems help manage subsea equipment loads, maintain flow assurance and protect infrastructure from mechanical damage and environmental exposure.
At the same time, many of the same technologies are also being applied within offshore wind and subsea power transmission projects, creating overlap between traditional offshore energy infrastructure and energy-transition investment.
Freudenberg said the acquisition further expands its capabilities across both markets.
Freudenberg Group, headquartered in Weinheim, Germany, operates across multiple industrial sectors, including sealing technologies, filtration systems, technical textiles, specialty chemicals and vibration-control products.
The company reported approximately €11.7 billion in sales during 2025 and employs roughly 51,000 people globally.
