5 MW MOPICO unit will boost Baltic gas transmission capacity while supporting regional decarbonization goals

Everllence has signed a contract with European engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor MT Group to deliver a 5 MW hermetically sealed MOPICO (Motor Pipeline Compressor) system for the Jauniunai gas compressor station in Lithuania. The system will be operated by AB Amber Grid, the country’s national gas transmission system operator.
The Jauniunai installation will mark a milestone in the modernization of the Baltic gas grid. Lithuania’s transmission network serves as a key corridor for transporting gas between Latvia and Poland. To move large volumes efficiently over long distances, compressors are installed every 150 to 250 kilometers to maintain pressure in the pipeline. The new MOPICO unit will compress natural gas to approximately 53 bar, enhancing system capacity while operating entirely on renewable electricity.
Because the compressor is fully electric and hermetically sealed, it achieves zero direct CO₂ emissions during operation, supporting Lithuania’s broader energy transition objectives.
“This project with Everllence demonstrates how advanced technology and sustainability can be brought together,” said Mindaugas Zakaras, CEO of MT Group. “By integrating renewable energy and zero-emission compression into Amber Grid’s network, we are modernizing critical infrastructure while shaping the foundation for a cleaner and more resilient energy future in Europe.”
Basil Zweifel, senior vice president for sales and project management in Everllence’s Upstream & Midstream division, said the partnership represents “a milestone on the path toward stable and sustainable energy supply in Europe.”
“Our MOPICO technology combines energy efficiency, flexibility and environmental performance,” Zweifel said. “With its fully electric drive and oil-free, hermetically sealed design, the system eliminates emissions, reduces maintenance and supports the decarbonization of critical infrastructure.”
The MOPICO compressor will be driven directly by an Everllence high-speed electric motor and supported by MECOS active magnetic bearings, eliminating the need for dry gas seals and lubrication systems. This design improves reliability and reduces lifecycle costs compared with conventional compressor technology.
Design, manufacturing and testing will take place at Everllence’s headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.
Dr. Kristina Norvaišienė, managing director of MT Group, said the project aligns with European climate neutrality goals. “Everllence’s high-speed compressor with magnetic bearing technology represents cutting-edge engineering and a clear commitment to decarbonization,” she said.
Wiebke Korfitsen, team lead for commercial bid management at Everllence, added that the contract reflects a strong partnership among all project participants. “At Everllence, we are committed to delivering solutions that not only meet today’s operational needs but also set new benchmarks in sustainability and long-term value for our clients and communities,” she said.
