Burckhardt Compression wins MTU order

Burckhardt Compression will supply two high-speed compressor solutions for MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg’s gas turbine test facility in Ludwigsfelde, Germany.

Burckhardt Compression has secured an order from MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg to supply two high-speed compressor solutions for the company’s gas turbine test facility in Ludwigsfelde, Germany.

The compressors will support performance testing carried out as part of MTU’s maintenance, repair and overhaul services for industrial gas turbine engines.

MTU currently operates the test facility using natural gas but is preparing the site to handle blends containing up to 25% hydrogen. Burckhardt Compression said the compressor systems were designed to meet the reliability requirements of the test operation while supporting the facility’s future fuel plans.

MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg specializes in maintenance of GE Aerospace LM-series industrial gas turbines. The Ludwigsfelde site, south of Berlin, is also adding a new production building as MTU expands capacity to accommodate increasing maintenance demand.

Industrial gas turbines remain an important part of Europe’s power system, particularly for flexible generation used to balance variable renewable energy production.

“Reliable gas turbine infrastructure remains essential for ensuring security of supply while supporting the energy transition,” said Andreas Brautsch, president of Burckhardt Compression’s Systems Division.

Brautsch said the project combines operational reliability with the capability to accommodate future changes in fuel composition.

The order followed collaboration between Burckhardt Compression and MTU during the project development phase. Burckhardt said its scope combines compressor technology, system engineering, service capabilities and local project execution.

The companies did not disclose the value of the order, compressor ratings, operating pressures or delivery schedule.
