BHGE Launches Methane Detection, Reduction System

Premium Content

January 29, 2019

FLORENCE, ITALY – Baker Hughes, a GE Company (BHGE) unveiled a new product designed to tackle methane emissions in upstream and midstream oil and gas applications. Known as Lumen, the digital platform uses ground-based wireless sensors and an aerial drone for monitoring, detecting and reducing methane emissions.

Lumen’s ground-based sensor system, Lumen terrain, is a solar-powered, wireless system that creates a “digital mesh” network around a facility. Lumen Sky, the aerial drone, features a multi-faceted UAV system using a combination of TDLAS and OGI technologies, as well as high-definition aerial video streaming.

These two technologies, together with proprietary algorithms and machine learning capabilities, provide concentrated methane data, as well as the location and rate of the leak. The data, accessible through a cloud platform, is available instantly through a computer or smartphone.
