@GCA: Ariel Debuts New Compressor Frames

March 22, 2018

Ariel Corp. has added its KBK:T frames to its family of compressors. The company debuted the new frames at the Gas Compressor Association (GCA) Expo & Conference in Galveston, Texas.

The KBK:T frames fall between Ariel’s existing JGK:T and JGC:D compressors in terms of gas rod load ratings. They incorporate a variety of new features to meet the needs of the gas compression industry, the company said.

The KBK:T frames have 5 and 6 in. (127 to 152.4 mm) stroke variations, with rated power ranges from 1840 bhp (1372 kW) to 5520 bhp (4116 kW). The new frames have a maximum speed range between 1200 and 1500, with piston speeds of 1200 to 1250 fpm (6.10 to 6.35 m/s). They are available with two, four or six throws.

The frames feature a “KB” style angled guide design with through-bolt guide support fasteners, which Ariel said provides increased stiffness. Piston, piston rods, crossheads and connecting rods have been redesigned for improved strength and the crossheads, connecting rods and bearings are backwards compatible with the JGK:T compressors. The KBK:T model, however, nearly matches the JGK:T footprint, while offering significant increases in power density.

The KBK:T frames also includes a new cylinder line that uses KTCD cylinder bodies with non-collared 2 in. (50.8 mm) diameter piston rods. The cylinders also incorporate BTUU-style packaging rings and CP valves.

Ariel said it has simplified the auxiliary end piping by integrating the frame oil thermostat into the oil filter header. The KBK:T frames can also accommodate optional internal torsional vibration damper or auxiliary end flywheel. ELP and dual chain drives are standard.

More information on the new KBK:T frames will be included in a future issue of COMPRESSORtech2.
