Methane sensor from Wi.Tec-Sensorik

Cross-sensitivity-free gas analysis

The selective measurement of methane is of great importance in various fields of application, especially when interfering hydrocarbons are present in the gas mixture.

Wi.Tec-Sensorik GmbH has developed a special gas sensor for this field of application, which enables an almost cross-sensitivity-free gas analysis due to the optimal spectral evaluation. The measuring ranges range from 0-100 vol.-% or 80-100 vol.-% CH4 for natural gas analysis, up to 0- 5000ppm CH4 for measurement in exhaust gases.

It is also possible to measure higher hydrocarbons (e.g. alkanes with C2+) selectively compared to methane. These so-called non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) are an important measurement parameter in environmental and process measurement technology, the company said.

For this purpose, a hermetically sealed gas cell is integrated into the NDIR beam path, which filters out interfering spectral components and thus enables selectivity. In the case of high CH4 contents in the gas mixture, an additional electronic cross-sensitivity correction can be realized with the selective CH4 measurement. The measuring ranges, in this case, are 0-1000ppm or 0-10 vol.% NMHC.
