EIA: Warmer Weather Nets First February Nat Gas Injection

Premium Content

March 16, 2017

The warm spell that swept most of the United States last month led to the first recorded net natural gas injection in February since weekly storage data has been collected, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

For the week ending February 24, stored natural gas amounts in the Lower 48 states increased 7 Bcf (0.19 X 109 m3). In previous years, March has achieved record weekly injections, yet net injections of natural gas into storage don’t typically occur until April, the EIA said.

The rarity of a net injection in February can be seen in the data from 2010-2016. During that time frame, weekly changes during the month of February ranged from net withdrawals between 48 to 243 Bcf (1.3 X 109 m3 to 6.8 X 109 m3). Previously, the earliest net injection occurred during the week ending March 16, 2012, the EIA said.
