A first for Baker Hughes in South America

Baker Hughes has secured an order to supply gas compression equipment for a pipeline project in Argentina aimed at supporting LNG exports from the country’s prolific Vaca Muerta formation.

The company said it will provide three NovaLT16 gas turbines paired with three centrifugal compressors, along with commissioning services, spare parts, specialized tools, and remote monitoring and diagnostics. The equipment will be installed at a compressor station near Allen in Río Negro province.

The project is being developed by San Matias Pipeline S.A. and will transport natural gas to the Gulf of San Matías, where it will supply feed gas to floating LNG vessels operated by Southern Energy.

Baker Hughes said the order represents the first deployment of its NovaLT gas turbine technology in South America, highlighting increasing demand for high-efficiency, lower-emissions turbomachinery in emerging LNG markets.

Maria Claudia Borras, the company’s chief growth and experience officer and interim executive vice president of Industrial & Energy Technology, said the award reflects continued investment in gas infrastructure to support energy security and LNG export growth.

The NovaLT16 units were selected for their efficiency, performance and delivery timeline advantages, as well as their suitability for midstream compression applications tied to LNG value chains.

The pipeline project is designed to move gas from Vaca Muerta—one of the world’s largest shale resources—to export infrastructure, reinforcing Argentina’s ambitions to become a global LNG supplier.
