Updated (Dec. 9): Coronavirus impacts natural gas shows

13 March 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has caused havoc to the trade show circuit in the natural gas industry. The Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) is the latest industry event to be affected by complications from COVID-19.

The event, held annually in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in November, was scheduled for Nov. 9-12. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC), the event host, will run the event on those same dates, albeit in a virtual format. The next in-person ADIPEC will take place on Nov. 8-11, 2021.

The Gas Compressor Short Course won’t hold a virtual counterpart to make up for its canceled in-person event. The University of Oklahoma Extended Campus hosts the annual event, which was scheduled for Sept. 1-2 in Norman, Oklahoma.

The Gastech governing body and dmg events postponed Gastech to Sept. 13-16, 2021 in Singapore, the same location as the 2020 conference. Gastech 2020, however, will still have a presence this year, albeit virtually. The virtual event will take place from Sept. 7-11. Those interested in this event can register here

AMA Service GmbH canceled Sensor+Test, which was slated for June 23-25 in Nuremberg, Germany, due to the current restrictions in Germany that prevent public events until Aug. 31, 2020. Sensor+Test will return on May 4-6, 2021.

“Our team has fought tooth and nail to carry out the Sensor+Test 2020,” said Holger Bödeker, the show’s organizer. “This was a difficult decision, but necessary for the protection of the populace and the health of the visitors and participants of the fair.”

The GPA Midstream Association announced its convention’s cancellation on its website. The event was scheduled for April 19-22 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“The unknown duration of the coronavirus impact makes rescheduling our event during 2020 impractical,” the association said on its website. “Canceling such an important annual event for our industry was a difficult decision, but please know that we look forward to holding our 2021 convention, scheduled for April 11-14 in San Antonio.”

The Eastern Gas Compression Roundtable’s (EGCR’s) executive committee canceled its annual event, which was slated for May 5-7 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“After 47 continuous years of hosting the annual roundtable, we have never before had to take such a drastic action but this current situation is something entirely different,” said Joyce Perhac, EGCR executive director, in an email statement. “In this time of uncertainty and challenges for every segment of our industry and society, we wish everyone well and pray that you and your families remain safe and healthy.”

The EGCR will not be rescheduled for 2020, Perhac said, adding that the next roundtable will occur from May 4-6, 2021.

The EGCR executive committee stated on Friday, March 13 that it would monitor the situation and make updates as needed every Friday.

The Gas Compressor Association canceled the GCA Expo and Conference, which was set to occur from March 24-27 in Galveston, Texas.

“After much discussion, contemplation and with overwhelming concern for the safety and well-being of our attendees, we have made the decision to cancel the 2020 GCA Expo & Conference,” the association said in a statement.

The association said it will handle hotel cancellations for all those who used its room block at the Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa & Convention Center. It will also send out separate emails next week to all those impacted with payment and refund instructions.

The Wyoming Oil & Gas Fair also canceled its annual show, formerly slated for Sept. 16-17 in Casper, Wyoming.

Delayed shows

Power-Gen International has been postponed to March 30-April 1, 2021 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The event was originally scheduled for Dec. 8-10.

The Asia Turbomachinery & Pump Symposium (ATPS) has also been postponed. Originally slated for early April, the show will occur from February 22-25, 2021 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Neuman & Esser and STASSKOL also postponed their respective events, which both take place in Germany. Compressor Day 2020 has moved to Oct. 8, 2020 and STASSKOL’s SealTech 2020, originally scheduled for May 13, has been rescheduled for May 5, 2021.

Messe Düsseldorf and OOO Messe Düsseldorf Moscow have postponed NEFTEGAZ, a networking platform for the Russian oil and gas industry. The trade show and the concurrently held National Oil and Gas Forum will now take place from June 22–25, 2020 at the Expocentre in Moscow, Russia.
