GE Hits Sales Milestone for High-Speed Motor
Thursday, September 20, 2012
GE Energy Management’s Power Conversion business recently sold its one-hundredth Moteur Grande Vitesse (MGV), a high-speed induction motor used in gas compression applications.
It said the motor, which runs up to 20,000 rpm, offers users significant energy savings because there are no power losses due to a gearbox. The motor is provided with either oil or magnetic bearings.
The company said the MGV motors can be paired with GE’s centrifugal compressors as part of an integrated compressor line package in a power range up to 20 MW.
It said the MGV motor and centrifugal compressor can be installed inside the same pressurized casing where processed gas is used to cool the motor, eliminating the need for an additional cooling system. It said that combination is more efficient than conventional electric drives that require additional gearbox technology.
