Gas Industry Responds to Cyber Attacks

New alliance will coordinate protection efforts

Published:

Industry companies have formed the Oil and Natural Gas Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ONG-ISAC) to protect infrastructure -- including gas compressor stations -- from cyber-attacks.

American Petroleum Institute (API) helped launch the data hub, which will operate as an independent organization. ONG-ISAC will facilitate the exchange of information, help evaluate risks and provide up-to-date security guidance to companies operating in the U.S.

So far, about 25 energy companies have joined ONG-ISAC. It is similar to 16 existing ISAC organizations serving other U.S. industrial sectors.

ONG-ISAC said energy-reported attacks were 53% of the 200 incidents reported to the Department of Homeland Security’s industrial control systems emergency response team in the first half of fiscal 2013. It said although some oil companies already share information on cyber-attacks, better coordination is needed.

“Computer-based attacks are one of the fastest-growing threats to American businesses and infrastructure,” said API Vice President Kyle Isakower. “The center builds on existing programs to help companies quickly identify and respond to threats against energy production and distribution systems such as refineries and pipelines and stay connected with law enforcement agencies.”
